Waipahu beat McCully 10 to 9 in the 1pm Championship Tournament game @Hans L’Orange.
McCully, playing their 2nd Championship Tournament game of the day, took an early 2 to 0 lead in the top of the first inning on a 2 rbi base hit by Harrison Kuroda, only to have Waipahu score 3 runs in their half of the inning. McCully held on to their tight 1 run lead going into the bottom of the 7th. McCully pitcher Keanu Sato held hard hitting Waipahu to 1 run after the 1st inning until Waipahu broke open the game in the 7th inning as Waipahu designated hitter Danny Kimura drove home the tying and go ahead runs with a single up the middle. McCully responded with 4 runs in the top of the 8th inning to tie the game, led by Colby Ho’s dramatic 2 out 2 run homer to deep left centerfield. McCully featured fine defensive play from catcher Jarryd Maeda, who threw out 2 Waipahu base stealers and left fielder Gainor Nitta with a diving catch to rob Danny Kimura of his 4th base hit of the game.
McCully escaped a Waipahu rally in the bottom of the 9th inning as McCully centerfielder Rory Nakayama made a web gem catch as he ran down a deep fly ball a few feet in front of the 387 foot sign in deep right centerfield that many thought would drive in the winning run and end the game. McCully pitcher Shayne Nakata proceeded to load the bases but got out of the jam by striking out the next batter after running the count to 3-0 and got the last out of the inning on a line drive. McCully’s luck ran out as Waipahu’s Zach Kometani drove home the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning on a hard hit high bouncer over the drawn in infield with the bases loaded.
Waipahu pitcher Shaun Kiriu struck out 4 while walking none to gut out the complete 10 inning win against McCully on Sunday despite pitching 7 innings against Waialae on Thursday. Kiriu was aided by fine defensive plays by 2nd baseman Reese Kato who made back handed catches of pop flies in centerfield and left fielder Stephen Koki who made a diving sliding catch to rob McCully’s Bryce Marcouller of a base hit.
Waipahu advances to the 7pm Championship game on Monday (3/17) @Hans L’Orange vs Pearl City.
