Waipahu wins the series 2-1 and will represent the Country Division against the Town Division Champion Waialae for the Oahu AJA Baseball League Championship.
Waipahu was led in the 3 game series by outstanding performances from shortstop Hunter Hirayama, outfielder Logan Salcedo, 3rd baseman Zach Kometani & pitchers David Torigoe & Shaun Kiriu. Hirayama batted .667 (8 for 12), scored 6 runs and fielded 14 chances with 0 errors. Salcedo batted .583 (7 for 12) while scoring 5 runs. Kometani battted .462 (6 for 13) with 5 RBI. Torigoe held PC to 4 runs in Waipahu’s 1st game 7 innings win. In the deciding 3rd game, Kiriu threw a 9 inning complete game by holding down Pearl City to 3 runs with 0 walks. Waipahu scored 31 runs for the series and committed 0 errors in the 3rd game.
Shortstop Tyler Tokunaga batted .769 (10-13 with 8 straight hits at one point) while driving in 9 runs to lead Pearl City in the series. Pitcher Allen Komori kept Pearl City in the series by winning the 2nd game, allowing hard hitting Waipahu only 3 runs over 7 innings in a complete game performance.
Oahu AJA Baseball League Championship Series
Game 1 will be Wednesday, March 13, 7 p.m. at Hans L’Orange.
Game 2 will be Thursday, March 14, 7 p.m. at Hans L’Orange.
Game 3, if necessary, will be Sunday, March 17, 1 p.m. at Hans L’Orange.
By virtue of having the better regular season record, Waialae will have home field advantage and will be the home team in Games 1 and 3. Waipahu will be home team in Game 2.
Late Score Costs Pearl City Against Waipahu
- Sunday’s game against Waipahu was a heartbreaker for Pearl City , as they lost the lead late in a 14-3 defeat. The game was tied at three with Waipahu batting in the top of the seventh when Hunter Hirayama singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run.
- The Pearl City struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Waipahu , giving up 14 runs.
- Pearl City got things moving in the first inning, when Waylen Sing Chow singled on a 2-2 count, scoring one run.
- Shaun Kiriu led the Waipahu to victory on the hill. He lasted nine innings, allowing ten hits and three runs while striking out four and walking zero.
- Daven Hermosura took the loss for Pearl City . He surrendered three runs on four hits over two and a third innings.
- Chase Masuda started the game for Pearl City . He allowed three hits and two runs over four innings, striking out one
- Pearl City racked up ten hits. Tyler Tokunaga and Wade Tamaru each collected multiple hits for Pearl City . Tokunaga led Pearl City with three hits in four at bats.
- Waipahu totaled 16 hits in the game. Zach Kometani, Hirayama, Logan Salcedo, and Chevas Numata all managed multiple hits for Waipahu AJA 2018-19. Kometani went 5-for-6 at the plate to lead Waipahu in hits. Waipahu didn’t commit a single error in the field. Alika Kuraoka had six chances in the field, the most on the team.
