Game One goes to Waipahu, an 8-7 win over Pearl City.  Waipahu can clinch Oahu’s State Tournament berth with a win on Wednesday, March 14, 7 p.m. at Hans L’Orange.

Waipahu Defeats Resilient Pearl City

• Pearl City ‘s effort to come back from down five runs in the eighth inning came up just short, as they fell 8-7 to Waipahu on Sunday. Pearl City scored four runs in the failed comeback on a walk by Charles “Kale” Kaalekahi, a fielder’s choice by Cory Yuh, a single by Tyler Tokunaga, and a single by Chris Goya.
• Pearl City was right in it until Waipahu walked in the eighth inning.
• Pearl City evened things up at three in the bottom of the fifth inning when Waylen Sing Chow doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring two runs.
• Shaun Kiriu earned the victory on the pitcher’s mound for Waipahu . He allowed two hits and three runs over two and two-thirds innings, striking out three. Chevas Numata threw one and two-thirds innings in relief out of the bullpen. Numata recorded the last five outs to earn the save for Waipahu.
• Nolan Kometani took the loss for Pearl City . He went one-third of an inning, allowing one run on one hit, striking out one and walking zero.
• Daven Hermosura started the game for Pearl City . He allowed seven hits and three runs over six and two-thirds innings, striking out three. David Torigoe started the game for Waipahu . He allowed four hits and three runs over four and two-thirds innings, striking out three.
• Pearl City racked up nine hits. Kip Masuda, Sing Chow, and Tokunaga each racked up multiple hits for Pearl City . Masuda led Pearl City with three hits in three at bats.
• Waipahu totaled 11 hits. Numata, Zach Kometani, Tiras Koons, and Michael Lam each managed multiple hits for Waipahu . Waipahu didn’t commit a single error in the field. Revan Wong had nine chances in the field, the most on the team.
