PLAYOFF: Waipahu 3 – 2 Pearl City 03/03/13 Sun @Hans

In a masterfully pitched tension filled game, Waipahu’s Shaun Kiriu and Pearl City’s Daven Hermosura matched shutout innings until Pearl  City broke through in the bottom of the 8th inning on a clutch triple by Derek Fujioka, driving in 2 runs.  Waipahu struck back in the top of the 9th scoring 3 runs against Hermosura, aided by the pitcher’s own fielding error on a sacrifice bunt.  Regular season Batting Champion Danny Kimura eventually drove in the winning run on a soft line drive down the 3rd base line past the outstretched fingertips of a diving Darryl Nitta playing 3rd base.  Pearl City almost rallied in the bottom of the 9th inning, putting the 1st two runners on base but could not advance them with 2 strikeouts and a flyout to end the game.  Kiriu struck out 12 in his complete game win, adding to the 10 Ks in his earlier 11 inning playoff win against Pearl City.  Hermosura pitched valiantly in only his 3rd appearance of the season.

#4 Waipahu remains alive in the tournament and will play the loser of the 1pm Sunday (03/03) game of #1 McCully vs #2 Waialae game on Wednesday (03/06) 7pm at Hans L’Orange.  #3 Pearl City is eliminated from the Tournament.
